THE Armed Forces flag is set to be flown from the town hall next week and the council are set to consider a new ‘flag and lighting policy’.
Earlier this month, the council announced that it would only fly three flags - the Union Flag, St George’s Cross and Barnsley Council flags - from the town hall.
However, it has now been announced they will fly the Armed Forces flag next week as part of a celebration.
A Reform spokesperson told the Chronicle: “To provide clarity and consistency, the council is developing a Flag and Lighting Policy for Barnsley Town Hall.
“This will be brought to Full Council as a motion for consideration on Thursday, July 16.
“The proposed policy includes flying the Armed Forces flag and the Yorkshire county flag at points during the year to recognise our heritage and civic occasions.
“Next week, to mark the start of Armed Forces Week, the Armed Forces flag will be flown at the town hall.
“This is an official government-supported event and reflects our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, which supports and recognises serving personnel, veterans and their families.
“We want Barnsley to be a place where everyone feels supported, valued and able to be themselves.
“Our commitment to supporting Barnsley’s communities hasn’t changed, and the council continue to support a wide range of events and campaigns for all of our communities throughout the year.”
