OUTGOING Barnsley players David McGoldrick and Adam Phillips took to social media to thank the fans and club after their departures late last week.

McGoldrick was the Reds’ top-scorer and Player of the Year with 18 goals but turned down a new deal to join fellow League One club Mansfield Town.

McGoldrick posted: “Thank you to the Barnsley fans who showed me so much love and respect last season. I wish you the best.”

When discussing why he left the Reds and previous club Notts County, he is thought to have been referring to Barnsley when he said that he was ‘asked to make significant sacrifices in my role and overall package’.

He added about Mansfield: “The faith shown in me from the manager and board is something every player wants.”

Midfielder Phillips netted 11 goals last season and 43 in 182 games during a four-year stint. He was sold to fellow League One club Bradford City.

Phillips posted on social media: “After four years of being a part of this club, my time has come to move on.

“I would just like to thank everyone for all the support over these years – it has been a pleasure to wear the red shirt.
