HUNDREDS of items collected by the late cricketing legend Dickie Bird will be made available at an auction later this month and experts who are presiding over the sale expect bids from across the globe.

Harold Dennis ‘Dickie’ Bird OBE came from humble beginnings before becoming a household name as the most famous cricket umpire of all time but it was his kind and caring nature that ensured his legacy lives on around the world.

He died peacefully at his home in Staincross, aged 92, on September 22 last year.

His historic possessions ranging from cricket memorabilia to his certificate from when he was awarded the Honorary Freeman of Barnsley will be sold off by Budds Auctions on July 21.

Included are items such as Ben Stokes’ ICC World Cup final pads guided at between £3,000 and £5,000 and Joel Garner’s West Indies cricket cap, estimated at between £1,200 and £1,800.

Ted Alabaster, a specialist from the auction house, told the Chronicle: “There are hundreds of items included in the 167 lots and given Dickie’s standing, we’re expecting many international bids.

“Thanks to his career, he umpired across the globe and has huge associations with places like India and the Caribbean.

“There’s a lot of England-based items in the collection but stand-out things such as the international caps, bats and balls are also included.”
