WORSBROUGH Bridge boss Lee Morris wants to give the players who helped them to promotion an opportunity to prove themselves at a higher level.

Bridge got out of the Northern Counties East league via the play-offs last season.

They overcame Leeds UCFA 3-0 in the semi final before a 2-0 triumph over AFC Wakefield to go up in front of a bumper crowd of 1,617.

Though they appreciate it’s a big step up after 44 years in the same division they are backing their squad to make an impact in the Premier Division.

“Lee was clear about that from the day we were promoted,” said club chairman Mark Booth.

“The players who have got us here deserve the opportunity at a higher level.

“Two or three players have come in from other clubs but the same squad is together.”

Morris said after the final that he would be aiming for a mid-table finish but would be happy to stay up.

Mark added: “I am sure people will write us off but they wrote us off last season as well.

“We have a very experienced management team who know the level and know the players and what is required.

“As a team they have been around long enough and they are confident in the players they have got. We did not really see a need for wholesale changes.

“We are going to give it our best shot.”

Bridge had a ding dong rivalry with Dearne and District who nabbed top spot in what was a thrilling climax to the season.

That will be renewed this season as will matches against Penistone Church.

Mark added: “Dearne and District and Penistone are the sort of games you look forward to and it is a chance to get local bragging rights.

“It’s also great for our supporters, being in a new league, because there are a lot of new teams and places to go.

“We are really looking forward to the season.”

Bridge travel to Rossington Main on Saturday.
