A FOOTBALLER has been selected to represent his country - despite not having a club.
Teenager Jamie Green, from Wombwell, was called up to the Northern Ireland under-19 squad for next week's European Championships.
But the goalkeeper was released by Sheffield United in the summer and is now on the lookout for a new club.
He said: “Sheffield United got to the Premiership and the manager Neil Warnock told me he was letting me go. He likes to go with experience more than youth and didn't want to offer me a new deal.”
Jamie, who lived at Guest Street, Hoyland, before moving to Wombwell last year, has had trials with several clubs including Stoke City. But has yet to clinch a deal.
He said: “I've been up to Scotland to train with a club there but it was too far and I've also had interest from a team in Malta. I've been picked for Northern Ireland because I'm good enough so that's what my mind's on now.”
He is eligible to play because his grandma is from Northern Ireland; he has already won three caps.
He spent last week training with the squad in preparation for next week’s games against Georgia, Belgium and Romania.
“With me not having a club I haven't played a match for a long time, but I've been keeping fit on my own and trained with the lads last week so feel fine and ready.
“All I can do is give it my best shot then I’ll have to look at getting a club when the championships are over.”
