LIFE-LONG football fan David Charlesworth has paid tribute to Barnsley’s favourite funnyman Charlie Williams who died recently.

Charlie, was, of course, a professional footballer and played at centre- half for Doncaster Rovers.

David can remember attending a match at Belle Vue when Doncaster were hosts to Barnsley FC and Charlie was in the Rovers’ defence. It was an evening Football League Division Two match and was on the October 28, 1957.

Charlie was a reliable and popular defender who played his football in the spirit of the game, his tackling was tough and uncompromising, but fair.

Eddie McMorran, Barnsley’s popular Irish international, should have played against him but he was sidelined due to injury.

Doncaster goalkeeper Harry Gregg was soon to join the Busby Babes of Manchester United. He became both a survivor and hero in the Munich air crash in which many of his fellow players died.
