FELLOW men were conspicuous by their absence on my visit to The Full Monty at the Lamproom Theatre.
Was it, I wondered, the nature of the Lamproom Musical Theatre Company production or the fact that Barnsley FC were entertaining Plymouth Argyle at Oakwell?
Either way, I was busy planning my own escape to Oakwell within minutes of the curtain going up.
I had forgotten the stage version of the Terrence McNally story had seen the action switched from Sheffield to Buffalo, New York and was therefore unprepared for the onslaught of American accents.
I also feared that the early discordant jazz-type opening number would be representative of the rest of the score.
Thankfully the downbeat opening so appropriate for a story about unemployed men was soon replaced by a widely varied and undulating series of scenes and songs which sent my feel-good factor soaring.
