Chris O'Grady says he would like to stay at Barnsley permanently but he also wants to stay in the Championship and will have to review his options at the end of the season.
The striker has impressed with five goals in 15 games since arriving on loan from local rivals Sheffield Wednesday who are, like the Reds, in danger of being relegated from the Championship.
O'Grady, 27, lives in Darton and is enjoying being reunited with manager David Flitcroft who coached him at Rochdale.
He has previously hinted that he would like to be at Oakwell next season, but gave an even clearer indication after scoring in the 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.
"It would be nice to stay at Barnsley because it is a good place and the coaching staff are able to get good performances out of me," O'Grady told the Chronicle.
"Why wouldn't you want to be at a place like that? All I want at this time in my career is to enjoy playing football. When you're younger you have got to establish yourself but I have shown what I can do now and it's nice to have people recognising that and believing in me and giving me a chance. That's exactly what I am getting at Barnsley.
"But there's no point thinking too far ahead. We have got to follow through with what's important which is staying up."
