A Royston councillor has vowed to campaign to have speed bumps removed from a main road in the village after being knocked back by the council.
Coun Tim Cheetham said he had been told the ageing traffic measures in Midland Road cannot be removed as the council does not have enough money.
He said it will cost about £50,000 to remove the seven speed bumps as well as remove a chicane, signs and carry out white line work.
Talks had been held about the busy street following development proposals for the old Royston High School site including a supermarket and new housing, he said.
South Yorkshire Transport Executive was also asked to help fund the removal of the speed bumps, he said, but were unable to provide funding for it.
Fellow Royston Coun Graham Kyte, said in April the speed bumps were installed about 15 years ago and were 'causing more harm than good'.
He said bus company Stagecoach had also complained about them damaging buses.
Diane Hall, who runs florist Willow Floral Design, in Midland Road, said passing over the speed bumps were causing such terrible vibrations that cracks were forming in the walls above her shop.
Coun Cheetham added the restrictions have also raised concerns from the emergency services because they affect their response times.
Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman for development, environment and culture, said: "Some 15 years ago after requests from Royston members at the time, traffic calming were installed due to the local concerns about speeding vehicles in the area.
"The speed humps were installed and have been very effective in slowing the traffic in this area.
"Due to a budget cut (agreed by Royston members) we don't have the resources to remove the speed humps.
"There would need to be a full public consultation to remove the speed humps. If this is a priority for local members they could fund this out of their area council monies."
