The parish of Langsett maybe one of the smallest in the country, but all guns are being brought out for one of the world’s biggest sporting events, the Tour de France.

The tour will pass through Langsett  next July en route to Sheffield and most local accommodation is already fully booked.

The special committee set up to organise and celebrate the event is hoping to cash in on the tour and make it an event to remember with a gala day, food kitchen, banners and more.

But, the event is bringing several headaches to the planning committee’s programme.

Vanda Battye, a member of the committee who runs the Waggon and Horses with her sister Rachel and mum Maureen, said: “The village has only the visitor centre to use as a community centre and we understand that Yorkshire Water have already booked the centre for a corporate event. And, as yet we haven’t heard what arrangements are to be made from the authorities involved regarded providing toilet facilities.

"We only have one set of toilets at the pub, two at the visitor centre and one at the cafe across the road. That definitely won’t be enough as we expect hundreds of people to swamp the village in order to see the tour go by."

The pub, which dates back to the 1850s, was originally a coaching inn for travellers taking goods to Liverpool and Manchester is a popular watering place for walkers and tourists .

In addition, a party of knitters have started knitting a huge banner.

“We hope this will serve as a permanent reminder of the tour,” said Vanda.
