Government cuts to further education are set to impact on thousands of students across Barnsley.
The Department for Education announced a 17.5 per cent cut to the funding for 18-year-olds in full time education. It means Barnsley College will see £500,000 shaved off its budget.
Barnsley College currently has 48 full time A-level students aged 18 and 594 vocational students of the same age.
The cuts will affect students studying for vocational qualifications more than those studying for A-levels, as well as those young people who had lower attainment at age 16 and therefore need three years to complete a level 3 qualification.
Mr Jarvis said: "This announcement has come totally out of the blue. There has been no consultation, no chance to discuss the potential impact on students. The Tories are riding roughshod over the hopes and dreams of Barnsley's young people."
