DRINKERS in Barnsley could be forced to use plastic pint pots to prevent revellers from being glassed.
The town may become one of the first in England to have a 'glassless' town centre, under proposals outlined at a national licensing conference last week.
Police want landlords to use new high quality plastic, and licensing sergeant Derek Barker said he hoped to implement the changes across Barnsley.
He said: “We're not saying there is a significant problem with glass-related violence in Barnsley but one incident is too many. It is always in the face, no one ever gets hit in the leg.
“We are always looking to make things safer and we think the polycarbonate glasses are the way forward.
“They are less prone to being used as a weapon and are better quality now than in the past.”
But some licensed premises owners say plans to completely replace glass throughout Barnsley are bound to fail.
