BARNSLEY’S colourful Frumptarn Guggen Band is asking people to search their attics and find their disused trumpets, tubas and saxophones.
They want volunteers to join them in bringing their guggenmusik to Christmas markets, summer parades and carnivals.
Band leaders are keen to point out that they are a carnival band and exist to create a fun atmosphere at public events. They do not, therefore, pose any threat to the “many great brass bands in the area.”
Commitment similarly is not huge. Rehearsals average one a month and would therefore encroach little in membership of other bands.
“What is required, “ said spokesman Carol Roberts, “Is people who can hold a tune, play loudly, wear strange costumes and do not mind being recognised as they make a spectacle of themselves in the town centre.”
