AHOY there me hearties!

These two Scout leaders will help sail a large historical replica ship as part of a Scout award.

Gareth Bedford, 19, and Thomas Slack, 20, will form part of a crew of 40 on a square-rigged schooner off the south coast of England.

They will be braving the high seas before the end of March as part of the Queen's Scout award, the highest accolade in scouting, and the exercise has been part funded by the Penistone Round Table.

Gareth, who lives at Broadgate, Silkstone, is an Explorer Scout leader for the Barnsley Pennine district, while Thomas, who lives at Market Place, Penistone, is a leader with the Penistone Scout group.

The ship they are using will look like a historical sailing vessel, but will have modern facilities on board.

Gareth said: “I've got a fair bit of sailing experience, but I've never done anything quite like this before, so I'm looking forward to it.”
