A REFUGEE family have found a new home in Highgate after the local community rallied to help them.
Halima Mahmoud and her three children have been given special dispensation by the Home Office to extend their tenancy of asylum accommodation by two weeks as they are to move into a private sector property.
Shirley Speight led a community appeal for her next door neighbour, Halima Mahmoud and her three children, to be allowed to stay because they were settled and happy.
“It’s great news and everyone has rallied round to provide them with furniture, towels, clothing, you name it they've given it, and nobody has refused to help them to settle in,” said Shirley.
“It means that the children can remain at Highgate Primary School and continue their education. They’re bright children and very popular. We can’t thank everyone enough, especially the Chronicle for highlighting the family's plight.”
Mrs Mahmoud had been refused an alternative property by Barnsley Council and the community helped her to find one in the private sector.
