CONGESTION caused by hospital car park barriers has raised fears ambulances may not be able to get into A&E.

The barriers allow access into the hospital's car parks to prevent drivers going in when there are no spaces, leaving many cars trapped as they pull into the entryway.

The resulting queues can stretch as far as Pogmoor Road, and one driver stuck in a jam on Wednesday told the Chronicle he had been queuing from the Tommy Treddlehoyle pub.

Coun Sandra Burkinshaw said: “Something urgently needs doing, because if ambulances have to go in and out it’s a serious problem."
