BARNSLEY’S rape support group has criticised a BBC programme which shows celebrities playing the roles of jurors in a mock trial.

The Verdict follows a fictional case of footballers accused of rape and Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Helpline says it is an attempt to provide entertainment rather than information and serious debate.

Treasurer Dr Linda Helen said: “This is reality television that fails to reflect the reality - for example, the fact that most women are raped by people they know or that systematic domestic violence is also often part of the case.

“With rape rarely dealt with at any length by broadcasters, The Verdict is a missed opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of the issues.”
