A MAN who was stranded in Thailand after being struck down with a rare illness has thanked the generous Barnsley folk – many of them strangers – who pledged thousands of pounds to bring him home.

Craig Lindley did not have any medical insurance for his trip and when he collapsed on New Year's Day, he quickly ran up a five-figure medical bill.

By the time he landed back in the UK on Wednesday, family, friends and strangers who had never even met him – had raised a total of £40,000.

That meant he could pay his medical bill and also buy a plane ticket home.
