OBJECTIONS from Yorkshire Water to a development in Bolton-upon-Dearne could have dire consequences for house building.
The Waste Water Treatment Station is working almost to capacity and is unable to accept any additional discharges without risk of pollution to water courses.
AWG (Anglian Water Group) wanted to build on the derelict Addspace factory site on Lowfield Road but there was massive opposition.
The amended application, reduced from 204 to 141 two and a half and three storey houses, was refused, leaving the community jubilant.
“It was a good decision,” said Tom Holmes, chairman of FLAG (Friends of Lowfield Action Group).
“They took on board the criticisms by residents, but Yorkshire Water played a big part. We told AWG that we wanted bungalows and open spaces, but they came back with less open spaces and three storey houses.”
The properties would be only 80m from the sewage works instead of the recommended 200m and would be vulnerable to smells and flies.
