A MUM who narrowly escaped being run over is calling for action to slow the traffic outside Darton Primary School. Jeannette Renshaw was crossing Darton Lane with another mum and their children. They walked into the road after being beckoned by the lollipop lady but an oncoming driver ignored them, forcing the families to jump out of the way. Jeannette believes the road is dangerous and hopes traffic-calming measures will be implemented as she fears there could soon be a fatality. She thinks more signs are needed and that parking restrictions should be enforced. She said: “Drivers need to be made aware that there are young children around who haven't always got road sense.” Another parent who did not wish to be named said: “I'm surprised there hasn't been a bad accident because it’s an absolute danger zone. School buses from the high school and huge lorries make picking your children up a nightmare.” The parent added that there have been numerous near misses and that children’s safety is at risk. Coun Roy Miller is extremely concerned about the fact that a driver ignored the lollipop lady and urges all drivers to take extra care. He said: “The new school might help to alleviate the problem. We are having a meeting to discuss the potential for putting traffic calming measures in place.”
