MUSIC students have been told to tone down their guitars and screaming vocals as they prepare to play in St Mary's Parish Church church. The last time the popular music degree students performed was in raucous rock venue The Arches. Course leader Pete Birkby has told them he's expecting a more tranquil style of concert when they perform in the town centre church on Thursday. "Because this is in a church it needs to be far less electronic and aggressive so they are having to rethink their music. "It is an acoustic set so the students are approaching a lot of their songs differently." He said the musicians should enjoy the ambience of the church, which dates back to the 1300s. Saxophonist Kate Robinson, 19, of Summer Lane, is one of those preparing for the show. She is going to be singing with a group of course mates. They will be performing a Jools Holland track, a Katie Melua song and singing Sweet Home Alabama. Kate said: "We have had the chance to perform in front of a pub audience and with this being in church it is a different ambience. "This is a different environment so it will sound different. I'm looking forward to the experience. Hopefully there will be a big audience." • The concert starts 12.30pm and the students will be graded on their performance.
