FIREFIGHTERS did not have far to travel to tackle a fire at a Worsbrough church - they were next door.

They saw smoke billowing out of the Our Lady and St James's RC Church at Worsbrough Bridge when they were at a fire hydrant at a factory near the church.

Three crews from Brampton, Royston and Sheffield spent a couple of hours tackling the blaze on Wednesday .

An electrical fault in the vestry is believed to have been the cause. There was "significant" damage to the vestry and the rest of the building was smoke logged.

Eye witness Keith Allen, who lives behind the church, said the blaze melted the lead in the church windows.
