A COMMUNITY-OWNED wind turbine between Grimethorpe, Cudworth and Shafton has been erected.
Local residents joined forces to raise £1m in a scheme run by Four Winds Energy Co-operative to fund the 500kW turbine, which will generate enough electricity to power 370 households.
The power harnessed from the site, off Ferrymoor Lane, will be sold directly back to the National Grid to return revenue to those who invested into the community fund.
Paul Rea, chairman of Four Winds, said: "Local, individual investors got involved from pledging as little as £250 and people generally see a return that is significantly higher than anything a high street bank or building society can offer. This is reclaimed colliery land and we are pleased that it has been able to give a new energy use to the area and it is due to export electricity to the National Grid at the end of this month."
