PLANS for a school for Barnsley’s worst behaved pupils have been changed - because more primary children are requiring help.

The proposed Community Special School will replace Springwell Referral Unit.

It will cater for 65 pupils - 20 from primary schools and 45 from secondary.

When plans were aired last year it was thought the school would be for 40 children aged between 11 and 16.

But education boss Rick Lohan told the Childrens Services Scrutiny more primary children were showing signs of behavioural problems.

He said: “We don’t have any provision for primary children with emerging, challenging and behavioural needs. That is a specific part of this proposal. We will be able to accommodate pupils in Key Stage 2 as well as in secondary.

“We are getting an increasing number of pupils identified for referral who are younger pupils, very much in years five and six. But we don’t have a provision where we can address their needs out of school on a full time basis.”
