GROWING potent 'skunk' marijuana has become a widespread 'cottage industry' because it is so easy to make a quick buck.

Plants with a £120,000 street value have been seized across Barnsley by police and council officers this financial year.

And instead of using other forms of justice the Safer Neighbourhood Unit is using the threat of eviction to prevent culprits reoffending. The SNU finds the approach more effective than traditional measures which often result in just a caution or a fine.

Manager Paul Brannan said: "It's certainly a cottage industry. People are cultivating cannabis for sale, it is being used to supplement incomes.

"There is not an area where it is not happening."
