TONIGHT'S Christmas lights switch on is cancelled due to strong winds battering the stage.
Visitors were expecting singing and entertainment from princesses and superheroes, an appearance by Henry Gallagher from the recent series of Britain’s Got Talent and the switching on of the lights but all three main events have been cancelled in the interests of public safety.
A Barnsley Council spokeswoman said the decision has been made after high winds made the stage area in front of the town hall unsafe. The fireworks display planned for this evening was scrapped yesterday.
The spokeswoman said: "We apologise for any disappointment this may cause but we have to consider people's safety."
A meet and greet with Queen Elsa and Princess Anna from the film Frozen and other children's characters is still going ahead as planned in Experience Barnsley museum at 6.30pm.
