A WOMBWELL man was so viciously stabbed that some of the blows which killed him broke his ribs, a murder trial was told.
John Gogarty, known as Irish Paddy, was discovered by his son, John Jnr, four days after he was attacked in July. He had been stabbed 69 times and his body was covered in blood.
Ian Birley, 43, and Helen Nichols, 38, who lived together at Mont Walk, Wombwell, both denied murdering Mr Gogarty, 65, at the start of their trial at Sheffield Crown Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Graham Reeds QC told the court that Mr Gogarty had suffered some defensive wounds to his upper limbs and puncture wounds to the left side of his face, but the majority of the serious stab wounds were to his chest and left side.
He said forensic evidence showed that several of Mr Gogarty’s wounds were very deep’.
The trial continues.
