Adam Hammill says he would like to stay at Barnsley after his current contract ends on January 9.

The 27-year-old winger has made a positive impact in his four games since returning to the club he made his name with before leaving in 2011.

"I would definitely like to stay at Barnsley," said Hammill. "It's a club I hold in high regard and it's possibly where I played my best football.  I have really enjoyed my time here since I came back and the lads and staff have been magnificent. I am playing with a smile on my face again.

"I am not going to just join another club in January for the sake of it. Everything has got to be right. Barnsley ticks every single box at the moment.  It's something that the board and the management staff have got to discuss and I will let my football do the talking."

Head coach Lee Johnson is also keen for Hammill to stay longer at Oakwell. He said: "There's no doubt we'd love to keep him but it's a case of the powers that be sitting down with him and working something out. He's at a place where he is loved and in a team that is playing around his strengths and attributes.  We gave him a chance and he has produced real quality. We love him, we want him to stay and hopefully he will."

Hammill is happy to be back playing football after what he says was the worst period of his life when he was not a regular starter at Huddersfield who then released him earlier this season. He said: "I am grateful to have this chance with Barnsley to prove people wrong and show I am a really good player. It's added fuel to the fire and given me a spring in my step. "I am getting more and more confidence and hopefully, by January 9, I will have plenty of goals and assists and people will see that Adam Hammill is back.

"I think I have adapted well and put in a few decent performances. I have added a little bit of experience. I am talking and leading by example. I wanted to show I could do that and I think I'm doing well."

Hammill admits he was exhausted after his goal-scoring return against York – one of four full games he has played – and now says he is 75 to 80 per cent fit. He said: "As a team we are playing well but we just haven't had the rub of the green.  We shouldn't be where we are in the league but we are and we have to deal with it.  We showed a lot of character to win ugly at Oldham. A few weeks before, they might have lost that game. Then we played well at Peterborough and were unlucky not to beat a good team.

"We just need to stay confident, keep playing the way we are and the results will change. The local derby against Sheffield United is a massive incentive for us and everyone is going in confident. "Our away fans have been magnificent in the last two games so we want to put a performance on for the fans."
