PLANS for Penistone to be ‘swamped’ with 153 extra houses have got the go-ahead, giving the town a facelift for the worse, say furious residents and councillors.
The development of 153 houses and apartments on the David Brown Pumps factory site, off Green Road, will be joined to the 269-home development on the site of the former Hi-Tec foundry, after it was approved by the council planning board this week.
The decision has fuelled fears about the town’s infrastructure, which cannot cope with over 420 new homes, said Green Road resident Caroline Ridgwick. “People are fighting for parking on Green Road even now — soon they’ll be queuing round a blind corner at the new railway bridge lights.
“All we'll see from our house is rows and rows of houses — we've lived here 26 years and I don’t want to move, but I might have to consider it,” said the Springvale Primary School administration assistant, adding that schools may not be able to cope with an influx of children from the estates.
