THE £18m roller coaster ride which left a Barnsley teenager needing her leg amputated following a horrific crash will reopen this month.

Dancer Leah Washington, 18, had to have her left leg amputated and boyfriend Joe Pugh, 19, ended up with shattered knee caps in the collision - on the Smiler ride at Alton Towers - which happened when the car they were in smashed into a stationary car on the track.

University student Joe isn’t convinced reopening the controversial ride is the right thing to do.

He told the Chronicle: “It’s not a decision I can say that I am most happy about as I would prefer the ride to be closed but I know that’s not realistic.”
