HALF of all school sex crimes reported in Barnsley in the last two years were carried out by children, the Chronicle can reveal.
Figures obtained from South Yorkshire Police reveal the scale of sexual violence among youngsters, or so-called ‘peer-on-peer’ abuse, with crimes including sexual assaults and even rape.
In the 12 months up to December 2015, a dozen alleged sex crimes were reported as taking place on school premises in Barnsley.
A spokesman for the NSPCC said the figures are concerning and more needs to be done to protect children from a ‘sexualised society’ warping their views on what is acceptable behaviour.
“These figures are very worrying, especially as the reported offences are alleged to have taken place in school premises,” he said.
