A 173-signature petition has been submitted to the council calling for reduced rents for Barnsley market stall holders.

It has been put together by trader Les Holt as part of his campaign ‘to retain traders’ livelihood and keep Barnsley market open’.

Since submitting the petition to Barnsley Council, Les and partner Kath have quit their jewellery stall on the market after making just £10 over four days - two weeks in a row - paying out more in rent than what they were taking home.

Les, 66, of Shafton, said he felt was compelled to start the petition because the market has ‘turned into a ghost town’ and traders are suffering badly.
