A BARNSLEY historian is organising a special remembrance event to mark the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme at the camp in Barnsley where many men trained before going off to fight.
The event takes place at the Silverwood Scout Camp near Silkstone on Friday July 1 where Jane Ainsworth hopes people from across Barnsley will gather to pay tribute to all who were involved in the Somme Battles of 1916, from the raids beforehand to its close in November.
“The site is significant as it was originally called Newhall Camp, created as the training ground of the two Barnsley Pals battalions until the end of 1915, when they went to Egypt for a couple of months,” said Jane, of Victoria Road, Barnsley.
