NOISE from a heavy engineering works is too much for Thurnscoe residents who have petitioned Barnsley Council to put a stop to it.

Florence Roper, 75, and her George Street neighbours have asked for a second investigation into disturbance from Lifting Solutions Ltd of the Albion Industrial Estate which backs on to their homes.

“It drives me mad when that terrible wailing starts, never mind all the banging that goes on,” she said. “I’ve just been away for a week to get away from it because I was a nervous wreck.”

Her garden backs on to the works where a crane, which she claims causes the worst noise, is sited.

“You never know when it’s going to start up, but when it does the noise drives me mad. Sometimes I can’t even hear the television.”

The petition went to the council’s Cabinet on Wednesday.

Cabinet spokesman Coun Roy Miller said that noise is to be expected from industrial estates and companies must have flexibility to enable them to be competitive and maintain a strong employment base with minimum disruption to residents.
