THE proposed high speed rail project HS2 will no longer slice through Barnsley, according to plans unveiled this week which could see the route shifted several miles east.
Under the original plan, details for the HS2 route showed the line to Leeds would cut across the borough, and trains would pass through Hoyland Common, Ardsley, Lundwood, Cudworth and Shafton. It also included a main line interchange at Meadowhall.
But that would be scrapped under the new proposal which would see the route head towards the M18 between Doncaster and Rotherham, before rejoining the original route just south of the M62.
There would be no HS2 station in South Yorkshire, with trains instead running to Sheffield on a branch line.
David Higgins, of HS2 Ltd, said in his report this would save £1billion.
