MOST men would struggle following the amputation of a leg and a battle with lung cancer, but not Wayne ‘Masher’ Marshall.

Instead Masher, 52, has decided to organise a music festival to pay back those who have helped him over the past year.

Masher, from Marsh Street, Wombwell, is organising the event - dubbed Smashfest - on August 20 at Wombwell’s The Alma pub, alongside landlord and school friend Jimmy Hardy.

He lost his leg last April, after returning home from a Las Vegas holiday and jetting off to Benidorm two days later. Unknown to him, the quick succession of flights caused deep vein thrombosis in his leg. And two weeks later, after his right foot went numb and his big toe ballooned to the size of his palm, he was treated at Barnsley Hospital with blood thinning tablets in an attempt to disperse the blood clot. But after a five day stay in Sheffield’s Northern General, he was told it would have to be amputated.
