Barnsley won their first home league game since promotion to the Championship with a comfortable 2-0 home success over Derby County.
An own goal by Scott Carson gave the Reds an early lead then Alfie Mawson got the second just after the break. It was a first win of the season, after losses to Ipswich and Northampton, and an extremely impressive performance by the home side.
The only change head coach Paul Heckingbottom made to the side which lost at home to Northampton Town in the EFL Cup on Tuesday was to replace George Moncur with Ryan Kent who played on the right wing as Marley Watkins moved up front with Tom Bradshaw.
The Reds made a very bright start and took the lead on 11 minutes. Kent cut in from the right wing and found his captain Conor Hourihane who unleashed a powerful low shot from 25 yards. The ball struck the base of the left post but then cannoned into the back former England goalkeeper Carson, who had dived to stop the shot, and bounced back into the net.
Very little happened in the remainder of the first half with Derby having more possession and territory but all they had to show for it were shots by Craig Bryson and Tom Ince which did not threatened the home goal.
Mawson doubled the lead on 47 minutes when he rose above the Derby defence and headed a right-wing free-kick from Hourihane past Carson from close range.
After making the first two goals, Hourihane almost got one of his own on 53 minutes when his ferocious volley from the edge of the box was tipped over by Carson.
Kent came even closer to making it 3-0 when his powerful shot from 25 yards smacked into the lower part of the right post. Seconds later, Derby finally had their first shot of the game on 65 minutes when lively substitute Johnny Russell fired straight at Adam Davies from outside the box.
Davies made a much better save two minutes later when he got down well to his right to turn a Tom Ince shot around his right post after the Derby attacker had got the better of James Bree in the home box.
The Reds kept creating chances and Hourihane was once again denied by Carson as the goalkeeper turned a low 20-yard shot impressively around his left post.
At the other end, Davies made another impressive save as he flung himself down to his left to keep out a header from Craig Forsyth. The Reds goalkeeper then picked the ball out of a very similar place with his latest flying stop from a long-range Russell shot.
