TWO cinema-lovers who learnt their trade in Barnsley cinemas are hoping to reopen the Odeon this summer.
Rob Younger and Gerald Parkes were both projectionists - Rob started at the Odeon in 1979 and Gerald worked at the Ritz on Peel Street in the 1960s.
They are in negotiations to take over the Eldon Street cinema, which closed in September 2005, and hope to be showing films by August.
Workmen were in this week and licence applications have been submitted to the council. Rob said: “I am so pleased that we are finally at a stage where we can begin work on the cinema. Having spent the first four years of my career working there, I was devastated when Odeon announced the closure two years ago."
Rob and Gerald are in talks with the building's owners, the Cordwell Group, to finalise the details of the lease.
