ARE tha lekkin' togger darn rec?

If you understand that you must have grown up near Penistone but if you grew up in town you're more likely to have said: "Ar tha lakin' football toneet?"

Either way it's the kind of dialect MP Jeff Ennis wants to preserve - and he has laid down an Early Day Motion in Parliament commending fellow politicians to protect regional accents.

He said research has been carried out showing colloquialisms are dying out as the globalization gathers pace.

"I come from Grimethorpe and I'm proud of my Yorkshire accent and I think we should preserve it because it has taken centuries to develop the dialects.

"It goes back to Viking days and it is something we need to look at preserving. There are good things to come from the growth of the 'global village'. The downside of that is that we are seeing the growth of estuary English where everybody speaks the same. We need to protect regional accents."
