A CONSULTATION of the future of libraries across Barnsley begins next week as the council tries to save £165,000 from the libraries budget by 2020.

The council says it wants people to get involved in the Let’s Talk Libraries consultation which will open on Wednesday and is the first stage in what the council says are long-term plans to create a ‘modern, dynamic, efficient service’ that better meets people’s needs.

The library service says any variety of options will be considered and there will not necessarily be any library closures. The changes, due to come into effect by 2020, could include making more services available online, more flexible opening hours using electronic access technology, integrating library services, and community groups helping to run local libraries.

Pensioner Mary Wilkinson uses Dodworth Library almost every week and said people needed to make clear how much they value their local libraries.
