PARISHIONERS are looking for a new venue after their church closed suddenly on Wednesday.
The stone-built St Paul’s Church at Pilley had been due to host a harvest service on Sunday, when the closure was ordered amid concerns about the structural safety of the building.
The building has had a crack at one corner of the exterior for some years and the fissure has opened to around half and inch wide before closing again, depending on weather conditions.
However, it is believed that movement has increased in recent weeks and the Sheffield diocese took the decision to close the building until it could be properly assessed. Now strutural engineers have now been called in.
