A WINE bottle smashed a world record when it was sold for £6,600 at auction - and it was empty!

The shaft and globe model was bought by a collector from Germany at the summer national collectors' weekend at the Elsecar Heritage Centre on Sunday.

And organiser Alan Blakeman insisted it was well worth the money.

He said: “It is a very rare and stunning example of its type. You would not find one in a museum that is as good as that.

“The rare and really valuable pieces are much better than life insurance. They are genuine investments that only increase in value.”

The purchase broke the previous record of £5,400 set at Sotheby's in London.

And the item was not even the most expensive one to go under the hammer.
