A late strike from Adam Hammill salvaged a point for Barnsley against Lee Johnson's Bristol City.

Barnsley had led thanks to Marley Watkins' first half header but missed a glaring chance to make it two with Sam Winnall's poor penalty being saved.

Second half goals from Lee Tomlin and Tammy Abraham had the visitors in front before substitute Hammill struck the leveller in added on time.

Josh Kay was the surprise replacement for Conor Hourihane in the Reds' starting eleven.

The 19-year-old, signed from AFC Fylde earlier this year, joined Sam Morsy in the central midfield.

Johnson named former Red Scott Golbourne as a starter and Josh Brownhill made the bench.

Ryan Kent carved out the first opportunity after his cross was touched just away from captain Winnall and out for a corner.

Barnsley went ahead on 21 minutes when Andy Yiadom was afforded space down the left and crossed perfectly for Watkins to head beyond Frank Fielding.

The goalscorer then stormed down the right wing before dragging a shot well wide.

Barnsley were temporarily down to ten men after Winnall suffered a cut to his head and had to be bandaged up.

The striker got up to take it himself but his shot was easily kept out by Fielding.

Ex-Reds loanee Smith fired over in the early stages of the second half before Angus MacDonald blew a big chance to make it two.

Kent's free kick was missed by Fielding and landed kindly for the central defender but he volleyed just over the bar unchallenged.

City levelled on 58 minutes out of nothing.

A cross from the left was inexplicably handled by Adam Jackson and referee Geoff Eltringham pointed to the spot again.

This time, it was converted by Tomlin.

Armstrong then rattled the City crossbar with an ambitious effort from 25 yards and Watkins could not finish from a tight angle after rounding Fielding.

Bristol substitute Joe Bryan then had a shot diverted just wide thanks to a block from Jackson.

Bryan then crossed for Aaron Wilbraham and the veteran striker's header was tipped on to the post acrobatically by Adam Davies.

The game looked to have been won with 14 left to play when Tomlin capitalised on a defensive lapse and played in Abraham to strike past Davies.

Winger Hammill then came to the rescue and after wriggling free in the box curled clinically into the bottom corner.
