SHOPLIFTING has rocketed in Barnsley town centre, according to a police inspector.

The scale of the problem was revealed at a Barnsley Central community safety meeting by Insp Julie Mitchell as part of an update she gave on the latest crime figures for the Central, Stairfoot, Worsbrough, Kingstone and Dodworth areas.

Insp Mitchell said the highest crime levels in the Central area - which covers the town centre and outlying neighbourhoods - was shoplifting with 54 incidents reported in one month.

“That’s gone through the roof,” she said.
