BARNSLEY Sixth Form College’s £18m campus was given the royal seal of approval on Wednesday when it was officially opened by HRH The Duke of Kent.

The Duke, 81, who is first cousin to both The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, was welcomed into the college by local dignitaries including council leader Coun Sir Steve Houghton, council chief executive Diana Terris, Barnsley Mayor Coun Linda Burgess and MP Dan Jarvis.

He was given a whistle stop tour of the building, which opened in January, before unveiling a plaque in a packed out EnRich auditorium and signing the visitor book.

The Duke of Kent said: “I can’t tell you how exciting it is to come see a brilliant new building of this kind and full of students who undoubtedly are going on to great things. I wish you all great success.”
