Barnsley drew 0-0 for a second successive match as they were held by second-bottom Wigan Athletic at Oakwell on Saturday.

The Reds had the better possession and chances throughout the game but could not find their first home win in six matches since August. They slipped down two places to 15th, five points behind the top six and six clear of the relegation zone.

Paul Heckingbottom made two changes to the side that drew 0-0 at Burton Albion before the two-week international break.             Marc Roberts returned from injury in place of Angus MacDonald while Josh Scowen was back in the side as Reds loanee Sam Morsy could not play against his parent club.

Ex-Red David Perkins tested home goalkeeper Adam Davies with an early shot but it was Barnsley striker Sam Winnall who had the first clear cut chance as he headed an excellent Andy Yiadom cross just wide from ten yards out.

Marley Watkins then brought a good save out of Adam Bogdan with a volley from a tight angle on the right side of the six yard box after Roberts headed on a Conor Hourihane free-kick in the 17th minute.

Very little else happened of note until first half injury-time when Winnall diverted a Hourihane shot into the net with his head but the linesman ruled the goal out for offside.

Wigan, who had already seen striker Nick Powell limp off in the first half, then had to change their goalkeeper with an injury to Bogdan bringing veteran Jussi Jaaskelainen onto the pitch.

The Latics almost netted on the hour when Reece Burke headed just wide of the bottom left corner from a Garbutt corner. That came in-between long-range efforts blasted just over the crossbar by James Bree and Adam Armstrong.

Yanic Wildschut was put clean through midway through the second half but scuffed a weak shot which Davies kept out with ease.

At the other end, Armstrong headed over the bar from a Winnall cross when well-placed in front of goal.Barnsley dominated the final 20 minutes as Josh Scowen fired well wide after a pull-back from Hourihane who then shot straight at Jaaskelainen from 20 yards following a scramble in the box.
