THERE was no ponying around last Friday when firefighters carried out a dramatic rescue to save a horse trapped in the River Dearne.
Firefighting teams from Tankersley, Adwick, Edlington and Aston stations all responded to the call at the part of the river nearest Park Springs Road, Middlecliffe.
The mare, thought to be pregnant, had fallen into the river. Due to the steep bank, she was unable to climb out.
The firefighters deployed a boat to get a head harness on the horse, which was then walked 500m up river.
Using a line, the horse was guided further up river to where the banking was lower and crews were then able to assist it up and out of the water.
The crews left the incident shortly after 2.30pm.
