WOMBWELL and Dearne ABC's Connor Nixon has added another string to his bow with a call-up to the England squad which will compete in the European Championships in Portsmouth. The 14-year-old came through a series of 'box-offs' against other boxers from throughout England to win one of the 16 places available in the England team. Boxing for a place at the 40kg weight, Nixon overcame Danny Paignton from Bexley with relative ease, winning 14-3 on points over the three two-minute rounds. He went into his final fight against Sam Bezzina from Repton knowing victory would secure his place in the national team and again Nixon took the honours, with four of the five judges calling the bout in Nixon's favour with unanimous scorecards. Nixon will now travel to Peterlee to team up with the England squad between August 3 and August 5 in preparation for the European Championships at the end of August. To cap off a good few weeks for the youngster, he has also been awarded the Ted Cullen Memorial Award for the most improved boxer by the Clubs For Young People. Coach Eric Walker is delighted for his young hopeful. He said: “I am over the moon with him because he is so talented in my opinion. “He works very hard but he has a lot of natural ability and he picks things up very quickly. He asks a lot of questions and it does not come as a surprise at all that he has been called up for England.”
