A PROFESSIONAL goalkeeper joined forces with the fire brigade to promote playing with footballs instead of matches.

Oldham Athletic keeper Mark Crossley, 38, returned to Hoyland to play in the nets for a tournament organised by Tankersley crew manager, Daz Wilkie.

The primary school children qualified for the final after a series of penalty shoot-out competitions at their schools.

Organiser Daz, 40, said: “It’s just a different way of trying to get fire safety across to the kids.”

Each budding footballer took three penalties against the former Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and Fulham keeper.

And Mark said he was happy to take part.

He said: “When it is for a good cause and kids are involved I don’t mind giving up my time for anyone.”
