Barnsley were held to a 0-0 draw at League Two Blackpool in the third round of the FA Cup and now face a replay at Oakwell.

The visitors were backed by an away crowd of more than 3,000 which dwarfed the home support, but it was the Tangerines who created the better chances for much of the game and will be disappointed not to have caused a cup upset. The Reds were not at their best but captain Conor Hourihane did miss two one-on-one chances in the last five minutes.

Paul Heckingbottom made three changes to the side which won at Nottingham Forest in the Championship five days earlier. Marc Roberts returned from suspension in place of Adam Jackson while Sam Winnall and Marley Watkins, who were rested on Monday, replaced Ryan Williams and Ryan Kent.

The hosts started the brighter and, after Kyle Vassell saw a deflected shot easily saved by Adam Davies after less than 30 seconds, Jim McAlister volleyed a great chance wide from an Andy Taylor cross in the second minute. Vassell then forced a better save out of Davies with a powerful 15-yard shot after cutting in front the right wing.

The visitors' first real chance came in the 21st minute when Tom Bradshaw sent a header wide inside the box from a cross by Josh Scowen who later fired a 30-yard shot well over the bar.

Vassell forced a third save from Davies, an easy gather after the shot was straight at him from the edge of the box following a swift counter-attack. Blackpool went off at the break having had the better of a dull first half.

Adam Hammill had the Reds' first shot on target 30 seconds after the break but his weak low effort from 25 yards was easily gathered by goalkeeper Sam Slocombe. Bradshaw then came close from a Hammill corner before Watkins headed Winnall's cross inches wide of the top right corner.

But Blackpool were still dangerous and Vassell forced Davies into another save, an excellent tip over the bar from a close range shot, then Tom Aldred headed a corner just wide. Brad Potts almost put the hosts ahead with a low shot from the edge of the box but Davies dived to his right to make another good save.

Hourihane wasted a glorious chance for an 87th-minute winner when he scuffed a volley wide after being played clean through when a long ball was flicked on by Winnall then substitute Stefan Payne. The skipper then went one-on-one yet again in injury-time but was denied by Slocombe after perfectly meeting a pass by Kent.

Home substitute Jamille Matt almost won it in the 94th minute but he blazed over from close range and the game was drawn. The replay is due to take place in the week commencing January 16.
